Integrating Care of Older Adult Patients in Student Clinical Rotations in Hospitals: Resources for Clinical Faculty

The Hartford Institute and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) have prepared two modules specifically created to help clinical nursing faculty teaching undergraduate nursing students in hospitals to integrate care of older adults. Using a use a case-study design with an “evolving case” progression, the 2 modules take a faculty member through a typical clinical day on a medical/surgical unit and provide tips on how to integrate content on assessment and dementia into the clinical assignment, the pre-conference, bedside teaching, post-conference, charting and clinical evaluation. Continuing Education Units will be available soon for both modules at a nominal cost.The Modules consist of:

• Overview Module: A brief description of the project
• Module 1: (approximately 30 minutes) briefly summarizes content and resources on assessment and dementia. It then provides teaching strategies for implementing this content into a typical undergraduate student assignment
• Module 2: (approximately 15 minute) uses an actual patient scenario to illustrate how to integrate content into a typical clinical day
